Ni Bonchi Judo Club
History of Judo
Judo was established in 1882 in Japan by Professor Jigoro Kano. It was derived from a range of martial arts predominant in Japan at that time, the most influential of which was Jiujitsu. The Japanese origins of Judo are maintained in that all the techniques, contest commands and scores are given in Japanese. Judo is now played in more than 120 countries throughout the world. In 1964 it made its debut as an Olympic sport for men and in the 1988 Seoul Olympics it was used as a demonstration event for women,to be followed up in 1992 Barcelona Olympics as a fully recognised womens sport. It has become widely popular in Australia since the first national championships were held here in 1956.
Ni Bonchi Judo Club Inc is registered with the Judo Federation of Australia (JFA), which is incorporated with the International Judo Federation (IJF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Judo is a sport which teaches discipline, physical and mental control. It does not include punching and kicking.
The main aim for children is to allow them to have a fun experience while giving them a structured advancement based on reachable physical and mental goals. The overall experience endowers the children with better co-ordination and respect for other people.
There is a unique grading system in Judo where children - under 10, under 14, cadets (under 17) and Seniors can progress through the techniques and skills at their own pace. There are many people well into their 70s and 80s still participating. Judo is a complex and skilful sport and should be taught only by qualified instructors.
